Information for Prospective Students:

The Law and Religion Program currently sponsors four joint-degree programs. The Juris Doctor and Master of Divinity degrees (J.D./M.Div.) and the Juris Doctor/Master of Theological Studies degrees (J.D./M.T.S.) are offered in conjunction with the Candler School of Theology. The Juris Doctor and Master of Judaic Studies degrees (J.D./M.A.) is offered in conjunction with the Institute for Judaic Studies in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Juris Doctor and Doctor of Philosophy degrees (J.D./Ph.D.) is offered in conjunction with the Graduate Division of Religion in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

In each of the four joint degree programs, a prospective student must apply separately to each school, and be admitted by each school. Upon acceptance by the respective schools or departments, the student should make sure to be in touch directly with the Director of the Law and Religion Program to confirm participation in the joint degree program and outline a projected course of study. Upon acceptance by both school, the student normally defers enrollment into one of the schools while commencing study in the other. Tuition is paid directly to the school in which the student is registered for a particular semester, regardless of the mix of courses, at the tuition rate for that school. All scholarship and financial aid are handled separately by each school, and apply to the semesters in which the student in registered in the applicable school.

  1. The J.D./M.Div. is a five-year (ten-semester) degree program which includes both a clinical and an academic component and is primarily, though not exclusively, intended for those who are interested in combining their law degree with ministry. A J.D./M.Div. student must spend five semesters each in the School of Law and the School of Theology. The student may begin her or his program in either school and must attend that school for the entire first year; the second year is spent in the other school. During the remaining three years, or six semesters, of the program, a student must be registered in each school for three semesters but may take course work in both schools, regardless of residency, during any given semester. To obtain the J.D./M.Div., a student must earn 79 hours of credit in law and 70 hours in theology. In addition, a candidate must maintain the minimum grade point average for each school and fulfill all curricular requirements as set forth by their degree programs.
  2. The J.D./M.T.S. is a four-year (eight semester) degree program designed for those who intend to pursue a primary vocation in law, but who are also interested in academic work in theology. This joint degree program requires 79 credit hours (five semesters) of law and 39 credit hours (three semesters) of theology, as well as completion of all curricular requirements in each school. A candidate may begin his or her study in either school and must spend the entire year in residence. The second year is spent in the other school. During the final two years, a student is required to be registered in the School of Law for three semesters and in the School of Theology for one semester, and may take courses in both schools, regardless of residency.
  3. The Juris Doctor/Master of Judaic Studies (J.D./M.A.) is a four-year (eight semester) program which requires 79 credit hours (five semesters) in the School of Law and 48 credit hours (three semesters) in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, as well as completion of all curricular requirements in each school. The M.A. component has specific requirements for language and thesis preparation which need to be reviewed and approved by the program advisor in the Institute for Judaic Studies.
  4. The Juris Doctor/Doctor of Philosophy (J.D./Ph.D.) is administered by the School of Law and the Graduate Division of Religion (in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences). Requirements for the School of Law include 79 hours of coursework and five semesters of residency. Requirements for the Graduate School include three semesters of graduate coursework (36 hours of residency), with an additional two semesters required for preliminary examinations and a dissertation proposal defense. All doctoral candidates are required to participate in the Teaching Assistant Training and Teaching Opportunity Program (TATTOO). A prospective candidate to the J.D./Ph.D. must contact the Graduate Division of Religion for additional specific details about the doctoral program. Beyond the basic course requirements, each J.D./Ph.D. candidate designs his or her own program of course work which must be approved by the advisor in the Graduate School and the Director of the Law and Religion Program.

Career options for joint-degree graduates are numerous. They may decide to teach, or they might accept a call to a local church. They may practice law in a variety of settings: with large or small firms, with local, state, and federal governments, or with any number of public interest groups. They may choose to work with a non-profit agency, or an independent human rights group, or a religious freedom organization. Our graduates have careers in all of these areas, and most have found a niche that is unique and satisfying. The choice of career depends as much upon your own individual interests and talents as it does upon the job market.
