Emory Law Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Katherine Brokaw was one of six women honored as an “Unsung Heroine,” by Emory University’s Center for Women.

“Dean Brokaw is truly deserving of this award, and we extend our heartiest congratulations to her,” said Emory Law Associate Dean of Faculty Timothy Holbrook.

Brokaw was honored at the March 7 Women and Gender Awards ceremony held at Miller-Ward Alumni House. The “Unsung Heroine” award was established in 1998 to honor those “who have demonstrated dedication to issues that affect women at Emory or in the larger community, but whose efforts heretofore have not received accolades or formal recognition.”

Other qualifications include:

  • Community service to promote safety, justice and equity for girls and women
  • Trailblazing in previously male-dominated environments
  • Taking substantial risk to challenge sexism
  • Service as a role model or mentor for girls or women

Award categories include undergraduate, alumnae, faculty, retiree, and staff or administrator. Brokaw represents the latter.

Brokaw joined the law school in 2005. Her strong background in law and litigation is an asset to the school and her primary clients—Emory Law students. Brokaw is also director of Academic Assistance.

Brokaw graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1982, with an AB in Classics. She was principal speechwriter for New Jersey Gov. Thomas Kean before attending Columbia Law School, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, articles editor of the Columbia Journal of Law and Social Problems and a teaching assistant to Dean Jack Greenberg. Brokaw received her JD from Columbia in 1990 and clerked for U.S. District Judge Robert P. Patterson Jr. in the Southern District of New York. She practiced at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York and King & Spalding in Atlanta for several years, in the field of commercial litigation.
