Master of Comparative Law (MCL)

The Master of Comparative Law Program is currently offered in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University-KoGuan Law School. The program offers students the opportunity to engage in a one-year legal education experience, including comparing legal systems and practices between the People's Republic of China and the United States.

Overview

Students spend the fall semester at KoGuan Law School taking a minimum of eight credits, at least one of which is taught by an Emory Law faculty member. Students will then enroll full-time at Emory Law taking 13 credits during the spring semester and five credits during a short summer term. Applicants must apply through KoGuan Law School; admission decisions are made collaboratively with Emory Law.

Minimum admission requirements include:

  • An virtual oral interview with Emory Law staff (by invitation)
  • A written test designed and graded by Emory Law staff; the test will be administered by staff at KoGuan Law School (by invitation)

Additional admission requirements may be set forth in the articulation agreement. 

Application deadlines:

  • Early application deadline - March 1, 2025
  • Early admission notification - by May 1, 2025
  • General application deadline - June 1, 2025
  • General admission notification - by July 15, 2025

MCL Curriculum at Emory Law

The MCL program requires students to complete the following:

  • Introduction to the American Legal System (two credits)
  • American Legal Writing, Analysis and Research (two credits)
  • U.S. Courts and Oral Advocacy (two credits)
  • Capstone: Comparative Law (three credit)

Students will also have the opportunity to choose from a specific list of electives totaling 9 credits:

  • Business Associations
  • Contracts
  • Criminal Law
  • Family Law
  • Health Law
  • Intellectual Property
  • International Law
