The LLM from Emory Law - now available online - is designed for attorneys who are seeking to expand their legal expertise. The program offers online concentrations related to business law and health law, and covers important legal concepts in each specialty, including regulatory and compliance, organizational formation, data management, and cybersecurity. Whether you are looking to enhance your current knowledge or change directions in your career, Emory Law's LLM program will empower you to take your legal career to the next level. The deadline to apply is November 15, 2017, for a January 2018 start.

The 15-month, 24-credit-hour online course of study includes 3 three-day residencies in a classroom setting on the Emory Law campus.

Applicants must have a JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

Note that at this time the online format of the LLM program is only available to individuals who have earned a JD degree from a US institution.  There are two courses that foreign-trained lawyers are required to complete as a part of the LLM which provide an overview of the US legal system and legal writing.  These courses are only available on campus and are waived for JD graduates.

What are the names of the LLM concentrations offered online? Business Law and Regulation, and Health Care Law, Policy, and Regulation.

Who will I take classes with? Your cohort will include fellow attorneys enrolled in the online format of the Master of Laws (LLM) program, and at times experienced professionals enrolled in the online format of the Juris Master (JM) program, allowing the opportunity to create new and enduring professional relationships.

If I’m in one concentration, can I take elective courses in the other concentration? Absolutely! Once you have completed the required courses, you may customize the balance of health law and business law courses to suit your needs and interests.

What are the concentration-specific courses for the Business Law and Regulation concentration? Advanced electives in the Business Law and Regulation concentration will explore key topics from a legal perspective, including the formation, financing, and management of business corporations; banking, securities, and financial regulation; risk management and internal regulation of business activity; the fundamentals of deal-making; data management and protection; cybersecurity and privacy regulations; and compliance for public and private organizations. 

What are the concentration-specific topics for the Health Care Law, Policy, and Regulation concentration? Advanced electives in the Health Care Law, Policy, and Regulation concentration will explore key topics from a legal perspective, including the regulation of health care institutions and providers; laws applicable to the structure, financing, and liabilities of health care institutions; relationships among health care institutions and between such institutions and their members; powers and duties of federal, state, and local authorities to protect population health while respecting relevant liberty interests; ethical issues and legal challenges in health care; data management and protection; cybersecurity and privacy regulations; and compliance for public and private organizations. 

Who will teach the online courses? Courses in the online format will be taught by Emory Law faculty and long-term adjunct professors — practicing attorneys who are experts in their field.

Is the LLM also available in an on-campus format? Yes. Students also have the option of pursuing the LLM on campus.

How much does the program cost? For students enrolled in the part-time on-campus format or the online format of the LLM program, tuition will be charged on a per-credit-hour basis. The tuition rate for the spring 2018 semester is $2,271 per credit hour. This equates to approximately $55,000 for the degree. For international students requiring a visa, federal law requires full-time enrollment, and part-time options are not available. 

How rigorous is the program? Both the online and on-campus formats of the LLM are academically rigorous. The online format employs weekly assignments rather than the traditional single end-of-semester exam of the on-campus format.
