Walter Jospin 79L, his wife, Senior Superior Court Judge Wendy Shoob, and their family have donated $400,000 to establish the Judge Marvin H. Shoob Endowed Scholarship. This gift, which honors the extraordinary life and legacy of Marvin Shoob—a towering figure in Georgia’s legal community – is the start of a campaign to create a $2,000,000 endowment to support law students studying at Emory Law’s new William and Jane Carney Center for Business and Transactional Law.

Born in Walterboro, South Carolina, and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Shoob’s path to the federal bench was marked by service, intellect, and integrity. He interrupted his studies at Georgia Institute of Technology to serve in World War II, earning the Bronze Star in General Patton’s Third Army. After the war, he studied law at the University of Georgia, graduating second in his class and went on to build a prominent legal practice in Atlanta.

In 1979, President Jimmy Carter appointed him to the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, where he served for more than three decades with distinction. Known for his empathy, moral clarity, and legal acumen, Shoob made landmark rulings that afforded due process rights to Cuban refugees who arrived in this country in the Mariel boat lift, improved conditions in the Fulton County jail, upheld the rights of people with developmental disabilities, and confronted systemic injustice. He believed in the rule of law. His former clerks remember him as not only a brilliant jurist, but a generous mentor and ethical compass—a true teacher in every sense. A colleague on the bench, US District Judge Timothy Batten, said of Shoob, “He was a great judge who was blessed with uncommon wisdom and a tender heart.”

Walter Jospin, a respected Atlanta attorney with Finch McCranie, former SEC Regional Director, retired Paul Hastings partner, and dedicated Emory Law alumnus, has chosen to honor Shoob’s legacy by supporting the Carney Center. “Professor Carney was my mentor when I was a student at Emory Law. He, like my father-in-law, is brilliant, kind, a wonderful teacher, and understands the importance of the rule of law. Our family created this scholarship so that promising legal minds from all backgrounds can access the exceptional education at Emory—and carry forward the values that Bill Carney and Marvin Shoob championed.”

This scholarship is not just a tribute — it’s an invitation. The Jospin/Shoob family invites you to join in honoring a legacy of service, mentorship, and leadership of two great men. To make a gift to the Judge Marvin H.
