Admission Requirements

A: Our median undergraduate GPA is 3.78. The median LSAT score is 165.

A: We receive approximately 4,000 applications annually for a class of 250.

A: No. All students are evaluated equally, regardless of state of residence.
A: No. We have a full-time, day program only. We admit beginning students only in the fall. It is possible, however, for an attorney to audit a class.
A: Although some undergraduate schools have a specific pre-law program, no specific program or course of study is necessary to apply to Emory Law. We accept students with majors as diverse as political science, biology, art history, and engineering. Writing skills, logic and analytical skills, and organizational skills are all important for students to perform well in law school.

Application Procedures

A: Emory Law offers three types of fee waivers. First, we offer financial hardship fee waivers to applicants who have received a fee waiver from LSAC to take the LSAT exam. To receive a financial fee waiver, please e-mail a copy of your LSAC fee waiver to  Second, Emory Law offers merit-based fee waivers directly to applicants through LSAC's "Candidate Referral Service." We do not grant merit-based fee waivers upon request. Third, Teach for America participants and alumni also are eligible for fee waivers by sending proper documentation to 
A: Yes, Emory Law has an agreement with Teach for America to grant application fee waivers for their students who
  1. Recently completed Teach for America in their two year program,
  2. Are currently in Teach for America and applying to law school, or
  3. Have been accepted to Teach for America for the next two years.

Applicants should request a fee waiver to with proof of TFA service.

A: Yes, Emory Law offers a binding Early/Accelerated Decision Program where applicants receive an admission decision within 14 business days of receipt of completed application.  Learn more »
A: We recommend submitting your application as soon as possible. All applications created by March 1 are reviewed fully. Applications received after March 1 will be reviewed on a space-available basis.
A: Due to the high number applicants to Emory Law, we strongly discourage the submission of supplementary application materials after the initial application has been received by the Office of Admission. This includes application addendums and replacement items. Please ensure that your application is complete and of the utmost integrity at the time it is submitted. The submission of supplementary materials may delay the Admission Committee’s ability to timely review an otherwise complete application.
A: We DO NOT give decisions or a decision status over the phone. We will not inform an applicant once a decision has been rendered on their file or when their file is sent for committee review. Please wait for the official notification regarding your decision. Most decision letters will be sent by April 1st.
A: No. The committee will NOT review a file until we have ALL application materials, including the CAS report, both letters of recommendation, the application fee, and personal statement. In addition, all questions on the application must be answered in full. Your application must be complete before it will be reviewed by the committee.

A: You may take the LSAT at any time. Most students will take it in June, October, or December following their junior year. We will accept the February score, but the applicant must submit the rest of the application before the March 1 deadline. 

We will only accept LSAT scores less than five years old. If there is more than one score on the CAS report, the highest of those scores will be used.

A: Emory Law requires two letters of recommendation which we prefer be submitted through the LSAC letter of recommendation service that serves all member schools. This service is included in your CAS registration subscription. Your letters will be copied and sent to us along with your CAS report as soon as your file becomes complete. Once we receive your application for admission, we will initiate the request for this data from CAS.

Ideally your letters of recommendation should come from professors or other people who are familiar with your performance in an academic setting and can tell us about your research and writing skills. If you have been out of school for a while, try to find recommenders who can attest to your scholarly abilities and your writing and organizational skills.

A: The personal statement serves a number of purposes; unlike the LSAT writing sample, it gives the Admission Committee the chance to evaluate your writing when you are not under pressure. It also gives the committee a chance to find out more about you personally. We strive to have a diverse student body in terms of culture, interests, work experience, etc. This personal statement gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself and elaborate on the diversity you are able to add to our entering class. The statement should describe any unusual aspects of your background that might provide an element of diversity in the law school. You should describe any skills or traits that you have had an opportunity to develop to an unusual level. Discuss as well any significant activities or work experience that might enrich your law study.
A: We require a one-page resume.
A: Yes. It tells us what you have been doing since graduation. Please note that we consider your undergraduate GPA. However, the committee also reviews graduate transcripts and takes those courses and grades into account.
A: The reviewers will review your undergraduate transcripts and take into account what courses were taken as well as grade trends. If there was a particular circumstance or reason you had a bad period in undergraduate, you may submit a written addendum explaining the reason.
A: If your application materials are not all complete (including CAS report, letters of recommendation, personal statement, and application fee) by the deadline, we cannot guarantee you full consideration from the Admission Committee. Please be aware that the Woodruff Fellowship application deadline is January 31. All applicants are considered for other merit-based aid, and if funds are exhausted later in the admission cycle, we will be unable to consider you for merit-based aid.

Guidance on Bar Character and Fitness Requirements

The Character and Fitness questions on Emory Law’s application sometimes provide a bit of anxiety for applicants. This guide is intended to ensure your answers are complete and accurate, which will greatly assist you when you apply to be a licensed lawyer in your chosen state after graduation from law school.

When you apply for Bar licensure to practice law, you will undergo a rigorous character evaluation from the Bar Admission’s Character and Fitness Committee in the state(s) in which you wish to practice. As part of the Bar application, many states ask you to submit a copy of your law school application. The committee will compare your answers to its questions with those provided in your school application.

If your answers are inconsistent, the Bar Committee will initiate a more intensive review of your file. For example, it may contact your law school to question whether you would have been admitted in light of this new information. You may suffer sanctions and revocation of law school admission for failing to disclose. The Bar Committee may schedule an in-person hearing to ask you why you failed to disclose information earlier. In some instances, the committee may delay your certification of fitness, which in turn may prevent you from becoming a lawyer as soon as you may like.  

Each state’s character and fitness questions are unique to that jurisdiction. Emory Law’s questions capture as much information as possible to assist you when you apply to be a licensed lawyer in your chosen state(s) and when you undergo the evaluation by the state’s Bar Admission Character and Fitness Committee. 

Below is specific guidance on the four fitness and character questions found on Emory Law’s application for admission. Two principles govern you while completing this part of the application:

We understand that our character and fitness questions may be more rigorous than other schools to which you apply. As with all aspects of the Emory Law experience, your integrity, honesty, and character in answering these questions completely is fundamental to the community we strive to maintain.

Have you ever been subject to any academic disciplinary action while in college or any educational setting since high school, regardless of the outcome of the action? This includes academic probation, warning, reprimand, suspension, expulsion, dismissal, or any type of academic discipline.

This questions concerns any sort of academic misconduct or allegations of misconduct with which you may have been involved. Regardless of the resolution, you must disclose. Examples of academic misconduct include—but are not limited to—accusations of using Internet research inappropriately in a class assignment, allegations of inappropriate collaborations on a take-home exam, accusations of misbehavior during an assignment or exam, academic probation, academic suspension, expulsion, or any other academic irregularities.

You must disclose these allegations regardless of what an adjudicator, dean of students, professor or anyone else told you. We understand that at some schools allegations and sanctions may be removed from your file after a certain time. However, you still must disclose that they did occur. If you were found responsible/guilty, describe any sanctions levied against you (failing grade, grade reduction, community service, expulsion, etc.)

Sample Scenario: During his freshman year, Alex attended orientation at State University. During the program, he had to write an essay about the school's history. He and a friend worked together on their papers and shared research. The orientation coordinator discovered similarities in the papers and initiated academic proceedings against them. The dean of students met with Alex, verbally reprimanded him and sent Alex on his way. The dean said he would not make a notation on Alex’s file and that this event would be between them unless Alex repeated the offense. Alex graduated four years later with a 3.9 GPA with no further issues.

Alex should report this incident to Emory Law.

Have you ever been accused of, reprimanded for, detained for, or charged with any criminal offense or school conduct violation, regardless of the outcome? This includes any criminal accusations, including traffic offenses, except for parking violations. This also includes any reprimands or social actions while in college or any educational setting since high school (such as noise violations). If yes, submit an addendum titled Social Conduct to explain the situation, including the background and circumstances as well as the outcome and resolution. Disclose even if any charges were dismissed, or if you were acquitted or allowed to plead nolo contendere, or if the conviction was reversed, set aside or vacated, or if the record was sealed or expunged. You must disclose regardless of whether you have been told you need not disclose any such instance. When in doubt, disclose.

This question should be viewed in two parts.

First, have you ever been accused of or sanctioned for any criminal conduct, regardless of when it occurred? This includes allegations of juvenile criminal conduct. It does not matter if the situation was sent to a diversion program or any other alternative resolution forum, was dismissed before court, was removed from your record after community service was performed, was expunged or otherwise removed from your record. You must disclose the allegations. In addition, if you were punished, you must also explain the sanctions, including whether they were probation, incarceration, community service, curfew, or other punishment. 

We understand that at the time of the allegations and dispute resolution, a judge, lawyer, adviser, or someone else may have told you the matter would be removed from your record or that your record would be sealed. You still must disclose the incident. The underlying point of this question is to disclose any interaction you have had with the criminal system, regardless of the outcome.

Emory Law requires that you submit information on traffic tickets as well. A simple recitation of the ticket, approximate date, background on the situation and resolution—including any fines or other sanctions—will suffice.

The second part of this question relates to social conduct allegations or violations. This deals with incidents that occurred while in college or other post-secondary education such as noise violations, alcohol citations, disruptive behavior, or other incidents that violated your school’s conduct policy. Even if the allegation, violation, citation, or other reprimand was removed from your record, and regardless of whether someone told you otherwise, you must disclose it to Emory Law. 

Sample Scenario 1: Georgette shoplifted from a store when she was 13 years old. As part of the county’s juvenile justice program, she was sent to an alternative juvenile court where a jury of high school peers sentenced her to write a letter of apology. All records of the incident were destroyed, and the incident never appeared on Georgette’s criminal record. Moreover, the supervising attorney coordinating the juvenile court specifically told Georgette she would never need to tell anyone about this incident.

Emory Law requires Georgette disclose this incident.

Sample Scenario 2: During orientation, Sam was cited for playing his radio too loudly in the dorm. The floor RA told Sam never to do it again and had Sam write an e-mail of apology.

Sam should disclose this incident.

Have you ever taken a voluntary or involuntary leave of absence or have your studies been interrupted during your undergraduate, graduate, or professional school attendance, apart from regularly scheduled breaks?

Note: This question does not apply for normal scheduled breaks in your academic studies. If you took a semester or more off, either voluntary or involuntary, let us know and describe why your education was interrupted and what you did during the interruption. 

Were you ever separated from any branch of the armed forces or the Coast Guard under conditions other than honorable? If yes, submit an addendum titled Military Separation.

Disclose any dishonorable separations from military service.

International Applicants

A: You will need to get a JD from an American law school in order to take the Bar exam, according to the State of Georgia. However, other states have different requirements. For example, our LLM program will satisfy requirements to practice in New York.
A: We are not able to transfer credits from non-US law schools because the programs of study are so different. Unless you are transferring from an accredited American law school, you will have to complete the full three-year JD program as a beginning student.
A: The LSAT is mandatory. Contact LSAC to find out the nearest location and time when the LSAT will be given. We are not able to waive the LSAT fee for non-US citizens.
A: Non-US citizens are eligible to apply for scholarships for the JD program. Regarding your eligibility to apply for loans, you should contact the Office of Financial Aid at 404.727.6039.

Notification of Decisions

A: We have three decisions: accept, deny, and wait list.
A: The committee begins making decisions in February. Decision letters are mailed out as they are made. We do not give decisions over the phone. Most students will receive their decision prior to April 1.
A: We do not issue decisions via phone. Admission decisions are usually communicated via US mail. International applicants will usually receive notification via email as well. Wait list and denial notifications are usually via email.
A: No. All decisions are final; there is no appeal process. You are welcome to reapply the next year, however.

A: If you plan to attend Emory, submit your enrollment form and payment via Please also see for deposit amounts and deadlines. If both deposits are not made by the required deadlines, your file is considered closed. We do not offer deadline extensions of the deposit.

A: No, we will not waive the deposits. There are no extensions, and they are nonrefundable.
A: Yes. Deferrals are granted on an individual basis for one year. Submit a letter explaining the circumstances and requesting the deferral to the Assistant Dean for Admission.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

A: No, all admitted applicants will be considered for merit-based scholarships so long as funds are available. If you plan to apply for the Robert W. Woodruff Fellowship, your completed application materials and nomination letter must be uploaded to our website by January 25. More information »

A: There is not a separate application for the Woodruff Fellowship. More information »
A: The Woodruff nomination letter should be submitted by an academic dean, pre-law adviser, professor, or another appropriate official from your undergraduate or graduate institution. If you have been out of school for more than two years and are employed, you may seek a nomination letter from your current employer.
A: Yes. However, students typically have their Woodruff nomination letter and two letters of recommendation written by three different recommenders.
A: Emory Law awards up to five Robert W. Woodruff Fellowships in Law each year to men and women of exceptional character, scholastic abilities, and leadership qualities. Your letter should cover those attributes.
A: No. The Woodruff nomination letter is submitted in addition to your two letters of recommendation.
A: No. Emory Law only considers applicants for merit-based scholarships.
A: Unfortunately, we simply do not have the funds to give to every qualified applicant. We receive many outstanding applications, and the committee has a difficult decision to make in choosing which ones will receive scholarship and how much.

Wait List

A: If you would like to remain on our wait list, click the link in your decision email and submit the required form. If you do not submit the form, you will be taken off of our wait list and your file will be closed.

A: Be sure to update the Office of Admission with any changes to your address, phone number, or email address. You may send these updates to Please note that if you applied with an undergraduate email address, you may need to submit a different email address after graduation.
