GreenLaw will honor Mindy Goldstein, a clinical professor of law of Emory University School of Law’s Turner Environmental Law Clinic. She will receive the Ogden Doremus Award for Environmental Excellence at GreenLaw’s annual Environmental Heroes Celebration Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016.  The event will be held at Nelson Mullins at 201 17^th Street in Atlantic Station. GreenLaw is a 501(c)(3) public interest, environmental law firm providing free high-quality legal and technical assistance to environmental and community organizations throughout Georgia. 

Goldstein serves as director of the Turner Environmental Law Clinic and director of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program at Emory Law.  She has represented clients in complex environmental litigation before judicial and administrative tribunals; in legislative and policy matters at the local, state, and federal levels; and in land use and real estate transactions. Her work focuses on matters related to sustainable energy and climate change, land use and conservation, sustainable agriculture and urban farming, protection of natural resources, and access to information. She has successfully litigated cases before the DC Circuit Court of Appeals and various district courts, and she has testified before several federal agencies. Her representations have been covered extensively by the media, including National Public Radio, The Economist, and The New York Times.

"There are many great environmental attorneys who started their careers under Mindy's tutelage," observed GreenLaw Executive Director David M. Paule, "including many attorneys who have come to work for us. Not only is she a great lawyer, but a great educator." 

In addition to her legal work, Goldstein has given lectures and presentations on a wide variety of environmental issues around the country.  She sits on the board of several environmental nonprofit organizations, including Wholesome Wave Georgia and Global Growers.  She is the co-chair of the Georgia Public Interest Environmental Law Coalition and a member of the Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership class of 2015. 

"Under Mindy's leadership, the Turner Environmental Law Clinic provides over 4,000 hours of pro bono legal representation each year," said previous Ogden Doremus Award winner Jewell A. Harper, who sits on the board of directors for GreenLaw and the Turner Clinic Advisory Board.  "Not only does she lead the fight for sustainable energy, agriculture and the environment; she immerses her students in the real world of complex environmental matters. Her students emerge from the Turner Clinic with a comprehensive appreciation for the intricacies of environmental advocacy."

Also being honored this year at the Environmental Heroes Celebration are environmentalists Nan and Britt Pendergrast, who will receive the Environmental Heroes Award, and legendary Georgia attorney Bobby Lee Cook, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. 

"This year's honorees have helped Georgia's environment by promoting clean air, clean water and the beauty of Georgia's land," said GreenLaw's new executive director, David M. Paule.  "I am personally very proud, and more than a little intimidated, to be honoring such an impressive slate at my first Environmental Heroes Celebration." 

About the Ogden Doremus Award for Environmental Excellence

Ogden Doremus was a Georgia Attorney, state judge, and one of the founders of GreenLaw. He passed away in 2007. Called "Georgia's Hero" by the state's environmental community, he was one of the first trustees of the Georgia Conservancy and was instrumental in legislation declaring marshes to be state property resulting in the Marshland Protection Act. He spoke at Georgia's first Earth Day event and served as executive committee member of the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club. He co-founded the Georgia Center for Law in the Public Interest, which became GreenLaw. He was appreciated for his untiring work in the environmental community.

The Ogden Doremus Award for Environmental Excellence recognizes the unique role attorneys play in protecting Georgia's environment.  It is given to attorneys who have, through the exercise of their profession, had a real, tangible impact on improving the life of all Georgians by ensuring their access to clean water, clean air, and environmental justice.
