Biography

Jennifer Hickey is a postdoctoral fellow with the Vulnerability and the Human Condition Initiative. Her research applies vulnerability theory to the fields of sexual and reproductive health and police reform, exploring an alternative approach to state responsibility and social justice based on human vulnerability. Hickey has an emerging research interest in technology ethics and policy, informed by her decade-long career in software engineering. She participates in an interdisciplinary research collaborative focused on applying vulnerability theory to issues of digital privacy, security, and equity in computing. Hickey’s work has been published in multiple journals, including Columbia Journal of Gender and Law. 

Hickey earned her JD with honors at Emory University School of Law, where she held leadership positions in If/When/How and twice received EPIC grants for public interest work at National ACLU Women’s Rights Project and Center for Reproductive Rights. Hickey practiced civil rights law for several years, primarily in the areas of reproductive justice and police misconduct. Hickey is a former fellow of the Georgia Women’s Policy Institute and regularly assists with state legislative efforts concerning a range of issues impacting women. She is currently pursuing a PhD of political science and a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies at the University of Georgia.
