Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program

Environmental Law Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative: Scholarships and Summer Stipends

The Environmental and Natural Resources Law program is pleased to offer scholarship and stipend opportunities to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the environmental law community. The scholarships and stipends are generously funded by our founding partner Kazmarek Mowrey Cloud Laseter LLP (KMCL).

ADDRESSING A LACK OF DIVERSITY

There is a striking lack of diversity in the environmental bar. Public interest organizations, governments, law firms, and corporations must diversify their environmental legal workforce. Law schools must play a role, too – building a strong cohort of well-trained and diverse environmental lawyers, ready to hit the ground running after graduation.

WHY EMORY

Emory University School of Law is dedicated to integrating diversity, pursuing equity, and achieving inclusion throughout the law school community. And, its Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program is one of the best in the country – offering students extensive classroom, skills-training, and extracurricular opportunities in environmental law. Building on Emory’s location in the dynamic business, governmental, and civil rights center of Atlanta, the Program offers unique opportunities to train, encourage, and incentivize students from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in environmental law.

HOW IT WORKS (THE BIG PICTURE)

The Initiative provides annual scholarships (up to $10,000 per student) and summer stipends (up to $5,000 per student) to Emory Law students who would contribute to a more diverse and inclusive environmental legal community. It also provides these students with opportunities to engage with prominent environmental attorneys, community and business leaders, government officials, and scholars through conferences, workshops, or other formal and informal convenings.

MISSION

The Environmental Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative trains, encourages, and incentivizes underrepresented students to pursue careers in environmental law. The Initiative builds robust pathways for professional advancement and seeks to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the environmental legal community.

Scholarship

The Environmental DEI scholarship will provide tuition assistance to rising second- and third-year students who 1) have a sincere interest in and/or demonstrated commitment to the practice of environmental law, and 2) contribute to the diversity of the environmental legal profession. Students will be eligible to receive up to $10,000 per year. The scholarship can only be applied to tuition.

All applicants must submit a statement of interest, a statement of diversity, and a statement of career goals. The statements should describe a student’s interest in environmental law, how they plan to contribute to the development of a diverse and inclusive environmental law community, and how receiving this scholarship will help them reach their career goals. Applicants may also submit optional materials to support their applications, including a resume, transcript, statement of environmental courses taken/planning to take, or letter of recommendation.

Final selections will be made in April, and the scholarship will be applied for the next academic year.
