Biography

Prior to becoming the inaugural Dean’s Professor at Emory Law, Professor Tomkovicz served on the University of Iowa College of Law faculty.  He joined the Iowa Law faculty in 1982 after serving as a visiting professor at Iowa in the spring of 1981 and an adjunct professor at the UCLA School of Law during the 1981-82 academic year. Tomkovicz retired from the Iowa faculty in the summer of 2021 after more than 40 years in academia. Before entering legal education, Tomkovicz was an attorney with the Appellate Section of the Lands Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, DC. He also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Edward J. Schwartz, Chief Judge of the US District Court for the Southern District of California, and as law clerk to the Honorable John M. Ferren, Associate Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

During the fall 2019 semester, Tomkovicz was a visiting professor at Emory Law, teaching both Constitutional Criminal Procedure: Investigations and Evidence.  He has also served as visiting professor at Pepperdine University School of Law, Southwestern School of Law, University of Michigan Law School, UCLA School of Law, and USC Gould School of Law. He has taught summer sessions at University of San Diego School of Law and participated as a faculty member in the London Law Consortium.
