Steve Karcher 88L writes that while he’s inactive as an attorney, he is now a rector for an Episcopal parish in Colorado. “My legal training and decades of both state and federal litigation continue to beneficially impact both me and the community I serve,” he says. Following busy and fulfilling practice in California, Nebraska, and Iowa, Karcher earned an MDiv and was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 2017. Dervan 02L named Plea Bargaining Institute’s founding director - December 13, 2022
Fair Trials has partnered with Belmont University College of Law Professor Lucian E. Dervan 02L to launch the Plea Bargaining Institute, designed to create a global intellectual home for academics, policymakers, advocacy organizations, and practitioners working in the plea bargaining space. In the US, 95% or more of criminal cases are resolved through a plea of guilty.
“The institute will help make plea bargaining research findings and case developments widely available to those in the field, while simultaneously creating a space for dialogue and collaboration to assist in identifying new areas of research and inquiry to help propel reform efforts,” Dervan writes. Zalesne 87L receives rare steel industry honor - December 9, 2022
In April, David Zalesne 87L will receive the Robert P. Stupp Award for Leadership Excellence, the American Institute of Steel Construction’s highest industry honor. Zalesne is president of Owen Steel Company and a former chair of the institute’s board of directors.
“David is a visionary who sees opportunities and solutions the rest of us can't. Even better, he's wonderfully able to share his vision and engage the rest of us,” said AISC President Charles J. Carter. “David commits and always builds great outcomes.” Zalesne is only the 10th Stupp Award winner since the program’s inception in 1998. Prior to becoming president of Owen Steel Company in 2004, Zalesne was a partner in the Litigation Department of Klehr, Harrison in Philadelphia and also worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
